It opens a draft, it doesn't send one

The code carries a mailto: address, the same thing an email link on a web page carries, with the subject and the message as parameters after it. Scanning hands that to whichever mail app the phone uses, which opens a new message. Nothing is sent by a scan, and the sender can edit every line before it goes.

A prefilled subject is what makes it useful

A bare address on a code saves typing. A subject line saves sorting: a code on a poster, a delivery note or a piece of equipment can name what it's about, so what arrives is already filed. That's the field worth filling in even when the body stays empty.

The message body costs the most

Every character of subject and body goes into the symbol, so a paragraph of prefilled text can double the module count and shrink each module at the same printed size. Two lines are usually enough to say what the message is for, and the sender writes the rest.

Spaces and punctuation arrive intact

Spaces in the subject are written as %20 rather than as plus signs, because a plus sign is read literally by enough mail apps that the subject would arrive with them in it. Line breaks in the body are carried through the same way.

The address is on the code, in the open

Anyone who scans it, and anyone who photographs the poster, has the address. That's the format, not this tool. For anything printed and left in public, use an address you're willing to publish rather than a personal one.

Everything runs in the page: the address and the message are never sent anywhere, which you can check in the network tab. Exports are SVG, PDF, PNG and WebP, and the code is static, so it doesn't expire.

If a code you already have won't scan, test it, and the explainer takes one apart.
